History/Overview of
Congregation Beth Abraham
Congregation Beth Abraham is one of the oldest synagogues in Buffalo. Located in the Elmwood Village, it has been an active congregation since 1922. While for much of its history CBA was recognized as Orthodox, it reinvented itself as a fully egalitarian Conservative synagogue in the 90's. Over the past 10 plus years, CBA has enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance, thanks in large part to the recognition of our commitment to making everyone who passes though our doors feel warm and welcome.

Shabbat Services at CBA
All are welcome and encouraged to participate in our services. Beginning in June 2009, Cantor Gelman began monthly musical Kabbalat Shabbat services. The service is joyful, energetic and uplifting. Each month we welcome new faces as word of our musical "ruach" continues to spread. Cantor Irwin Gelman leads us in song, accompanied by the CBA "House Band' and as Irwin says, “If you know the words sing, if you don’t know the words sing louder!” Following Kabbalat Shabbat services, all are welcome to join us for Kiddush, Motzi and a potluck dairy/pareve oneg.
We have also recently reinstated Shabbat morning services (also monthly) led by Cantor Gelman, although without musical accompaniment. The service is very much a participative/volunteer effort -- if anyone would like to lead us in any of the sections, including Shacharit, Musaf, Torah, Haftarah and D'var Torah, please let us know. We would love to have you join our team of volunteers and we know the feeling will be mutual. Following Shabbat morning services, all are welcome to join us for a full Kiddush/luncheon in the social hall. Please let us know if you would like an honor in observance of Yahrtzeit or in celebration of a Simcha or would like to contribute by sponsoring the Kiddush,
The dates for our musical Kabbalat Shabbat services and Shabbat morning services are posted on the website and are included in our monthly newsletter. If you would like to be on our email list to receive notice of services and other activities, or would like more information, please contact us at [email protected]
We hope you will join us in shul once we get the "all clear." Until then, please check back for a schedule of online events and services.
